Problem

In this group project, we investigated the needs of bicycle users in Uppsala by examining the environment, issues, and possible design solutions to enhance the riding experience.

Approach

To understand the problem, we began with the empathising phase of design thinking, also called requirements elicitation. We drew on on-field observations, personal cycling experience, and an online survey of 141 respondents, and identified seven issues in this phase.

We decided to address the navigation problem by designing a mobile application compatible with wearable glasses. In the define phase, we created personas and scenarios, which served as input for the prototyping phase. During prototyping, we developed sketches of a standalone mobile application interface and an augmented-reality component.

To test our solution, we used a cognitive walkthrough combined with contextual interviews during an evaluation seminar. Furthermore, we ended the session with a short survey based on the System Usability Scale (SUS). We refined the design based on the feedback, then conducted a second evaluation session with four interviewees.

Results

The customisable AR navigation interface provided hands-free navigation while allowing users to keep their attention on the road and surrounding obstacles. We presented our solution and reached the finalist list through votes from students and teachers.
